Bright Eyes, Brave Steps: Mario’s Inspiring Journey
We met Mario as a bright-eyed 11 year-old in the northern mountains of Guatemala. He lived in the same town as Dani and was born with a similar congenital deformity. He is missing the lower portion of his left leg.
His well-worn prosthesis gives proof to his passion of playing soccer and bouncing around his school campus.
With the help of the local Rotary Club, FAKS arranged with Operation Rainbow in February of 2019 to surgically adjust adverse changes in his residual limb.
When Mario’s limb healed, the prosthetist, Marvin Gramajo, took the measurements and made the mold from which he fabricated the sleeve of Mario’s replacement prosthesis. The cost of the new, more technologically advanced prosthesis was about $1,500.
FAKS, with your help, covered the costs of Mario’s prosthetic care which his family could not cover.
Through the efforts of Mario’s family, Operation Rainbow, Guatemalan specialists, Hueheutenango Rotary and FAKS, Mario has had the best possible shot at a bright and productive future
Mario is now living with his father in another country. FAKS connected him and his family with prosthetic services near where they live. Our primo soccer player has been successfully graduated as a “Functionally Active Kid.”
